SUM 41 Frontman On DONALD TRUMP: 'He's Not My Kind Of Guy'

SUM 41 frontman Deryck Whibley spoke to Rock Sound about the lyrical inspiration for the band’s new single, “45 (A Matter of Time)”, which is his commentary on the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump.

Asked about the very political nature of the song’s lyrics, Deryck said: “See, I don’t look at it that way. I know it probably can appear that way. To me, I looked at it as a very personal feeling. I don’t necessarily think it’s a political record, but if you were to say something, sure — maybe it’s a personal protest, in a way. It’s more of just my feelings. I’m not really speaking about specific things. I’m not talking about necessarily policies and, like, immigration. I’m not trying to change the world or change any policies. I’m just saying, ‘Eh, he’s not my kind of guy.'”

According to Whibley, his decision to address his feelings about Trump in a song wasn’t exactly novel territory for him and his bandmates. “We’ve done it before,” he said. “In the past, I was vocal about George Bush, as were a lot of people. So it didn’t really feel like it was that new. The difference for this time is that I didn’t necessarily want to go there. I didn’t really want to write anything about… I felt like the music, for me, was to take me away from all that kind of stuff, but it just kept creeping into it somehow. And I just felt like, well, it’s something in my sobconscious that probably has to come out. So I just allowed it.”

“45 (A Matter Of Time)” joins previously released singles “Out For Blood”, “Never There” and “A Death In The Family” from SUM 41‘s new album, “Order In Decline”, which is due out July 19 via Hopeless Records.

Armed with the most honest and intimate songs of his career, Whibley poured everything he had into the upcoming album. Producing, engineering, and mixing the album in his home studio, he pain-stakingly crafted and fine-tuned each song, highlighted by fast and full riffs, guitar solos from lead guitarist/backing vocalist Dave Brownsound, harmonious chords from guitarist Tom Thacker and the heavy, heart-thumping rhythm section of bassist/backing vocalist Cone McCaslin and drummer Frank Zummo.

SUM 41 will co-headline the inaugural Rockstar Energy Drink Disrupt Festival this summer on select dates throughout the United States and Canada.
